On September 21, 2020, Hainan International Arbitration Court (“HIAC”) officially announced that upon approval at the first meeting of the first board of directors of HIAC, a number of domestic and foreign professionals were appointed as the new arbitrators of HIAC. Hainan International Arbitration Court (Hainan Arbitration Commission) is the only civil and commercial arbitration institution in Hainan Province established by the People's Government of Hainan Province in accordance with the law on May 21, 1996, and also the only inter-provincial arbitration institution outside the four municipalities directly under the Central Government nationwide. In the larger context of constructing Hainan Free Trade Port, HIAC was officially set up on July 29, 2018, becoming China’s second international arbitration institution establishing the corporate governance structure with the board of directors as the core after Shenzhen Court of International Arbitration. It is nationally-leading in terms of institutional innovation. In May 2019, HIAC was awarded the honorary titles of "Top Ten National Institutions" and "Ten Best Institutions for Foreign-related Services" in China's second-round evaluation of arbitration credibility.
